TRAVELING PLANTS, INTERWINED MEMORY
An idea is like a seed. Once set in the right conditions, it will grow and grow, and grow, with roots and branches that spread and connect, and flowers and fruit with more seeds, allowing for something much larger to be created, and moving beyond its own life and time. This becomes a suitable metaphor for the project with the Jahajee Bandals, in which the chance connection through a community discussion on creole gardens brought about an interconnection between Trininad & Tobago, Goa, Hyderabad and Bihar. ‘The Botanical Afterlife of Indenture: Imaginative Archives’ (hosted at the Art Society of T&T, June […]

Accounting for Access
I learnt that meaningful access to art depends on the right mix of language, location, and curatorial approach—only then can high artistic values reach everyday audiences.

A Partition – of Hearts and Minds
I began to consider the way the earth must retain physical and intangible traces of conflict; memories of persons who have walked there, bled, died, become one with the universe. What are the conflicts for, both here and elsewhere?

Please Apply Next Time…
“Hey, what’s your exact age?”, I asked a female artist friend some time ago – “Don’t get me wrong, but there’s this residency open call and I wondered whether to send it to you…”. Of course, it turned out that she had crossed the golden age of 40, and therefore was ineligible to apply for the prescribed advancement of her professional and conceptual artistic life. In general, finding anything that caters to above 35’s is difficult. And this should not be the case, because so much churning and learning happens during those mid-career years and after. Many will agree that the […]

Between the Stage and the Streets : A Reflection on Women’s Dance and Identity
In August 2024 I had the opportunity to watch a Lavani performance at Divar, Goa. She takes the audience on a journey of their theatre rules, traditions, private performances, and a practical outlook towards their art. The production attempted to throw light on the various unknown facts about the traditional performative art and give the Lavani artists the respect and space they deserve. Historically, the genre of the Marathi love lyric, […]

Gatekeeping
Though I am embedded within the systems of the art world, I often question these inbuilt hierarchies, about who can enter and who is kept out.

Creating An Identity
At first, I baulked at the idea – my name as a brand! But then it slowly began to make sense. After all it’s only a beginning, things can change, grow, die, be reborn. It was the right time for Lina Vincent Arts Consultant.

The Mentorship Story
38 lovely people, three years, and many hours of conversations on art, creativity, collaboration, direction and progress, success and failure. I now have that many friends aged between 22 and 64. What does it mean to be a mentor? A whole lot of things.
