At the core of Khanjan’s practice is his engagement with forms of knowledge and human experience, translated within broad explorations of language and semiotics on the one hand, and the intrinsic behaviour of material on the other. For him, the transformation of clay bodies through the flow of fire within a kiln becomes a metaphor; a channel through which to address philosophical constructs of time and space, creation and destruction, the tangible and the intangible. Confronting vocabularies of existence, emotion and memory, he employs organic wood-firing in an intentional process, trusting the (mis)behaviour of the natural elements to produce the unexpected. Residues, like recollections, leave varied traces.
