Mapping Periphery & Centre

The exhibition is framed around a conceptual inquiry that foregrounds the discussion of centre and periphery, not only investigating the physical and geographical reflections within this diverse nation, but entering into, and questioning the uneven relationships it generates. Selected artists from across India have responded to the theme in different ways, bringing together visual commentaries that touch upon personal mapping and memory, engagement with landscape and place, as well as musings on multilayered local and global histories.

Individually and collectively, they introduce us to aspects of their truth, from personal experience and lived reality, navigation of identity and belonging, geo-politics and cultural hierarchies, to philosophical approaches and fantasy. These become filters and perspectives through which to comprehend the complexity of our times, and we as viewers are invited as vocal participants in these conversations towards more equitable societies.

The compilation of works provides space for contemplation on conventional definitions of power and privilege, authority and access, particularly at a time when the world is forced to negotiate with conflict and fragmentation. The arts have the capacity to create an interface for dialogue, and reimagine connection in these moments of othering and displacement.
