Lands, Real and Imagined

Women Artists Respond to the Art & Travel Writings of Maria Graham (1785 – 1842)

Maria Graham (1785-1842) was an accomplished Victorian travel writer, historian, illustrator, and amateur scientist. She produced four published journals based on her journeys to India, Italy, Chile, and Brazil, as well as a comprehensive history of Spain. The written and visual documents she produced in response to her interest in other cultures continue to be an important focus for scholarly research and intercultural inquiry. The Lands, Real and Imagined: Women Artists Respond to the Art and Travel Writings of Maria Graham exhibition is a creative collaboration built on the scholarship of Professor Patricia Frick and the art historical curation of Dr. Janice Glowski (Otterbein University, Ohio, USA).

It features the creative response of five accomplished women artists to Graham’s life, writings, and artwork, particularly as these were expressed in their own countries: Kavita Shah (India), Francesca Genna (Italy), Isabel Cauas (Chile), Leila Danziger (Brazil), and Paula Bonet (Spain). The exhibition debuted in the United States in 2022, traveled to Chile in 2023, and showed most recently in ARTHSHILA – Santiniketan, in conjunction with Visva-Bharati University in 2024.
